Chess, told as a story.

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen

Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen is widely rated the strongest player the game has produced. A prodigy who drew a celebrated rapid game against Garry Kasparov at 13, he topped the world rankings by 2010 and held the World Championship from 2013 until he declined to defend it in 2023. Where others lean on opening preparation, Carlsen grinds. He extracts the faintest edge from positions most players would agree to draw, then converts it across a long, patient endgame until the resistance gives way. His peak rating of 2882, set in 2014, remains the highest ever recorded. Dominant at classical, rapid, and blitz alike, and dubbed "the Mozart of chess" early in his career, he has been the defining figure of his generation. Stepping back from the classical crown, he continues to compete and win across the faster formats.
